What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice in which fine needles are inserted at specific points on the body. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine and is also studied for a range of symptoms and conditions. The strength of evidence varies by use; it should not be assumed to treat every condition.

What to expect at a consultation.

Ask the practitioner to explain the proposed goal, procedure, likely number and length of sessions, expected costs, possible discomforts, and how your response will be reviewed. Share your medical history and current medicines.

Safety and informed decisions.

Choose an appropriately qualified practitioner who follows infection-prevention practices and uses sterile, single-use needles. Tell the practitioner if you have a bleeding disorder, take blood-thinning medication, have a weakened immune system, or may be pregnant. Seek medical care for urgent or worsening symptoms.

Safety reminder: Do not stop prescribed medication or delay urgent medical care in favor of complementary treatments. Discuss herbs and supplements with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a medical condition or take regular medication.
